Uncatalogued by Burdick and still not correctly listed in the SCD Standard Catalog (i.e., there are 43 cards, not 50), this Cubs and White Sox set was issued circa 1911 by the Chicago tobacco firm Spaulding & Merrick (later acquired by Liggett & Myers) as a premium with their Plow Boy long cut tobacco product. The cards measure 5 3/4″ x 8″, which likely makes them the biggest issue known. While very scarce, they occasionally appear in auctions at around $500-$1K for commons, although some Cubs players have gone for $2K recently. The 5 Hall of Famers (Brown, Chance, Evers, Tinker, and Walsh) and Chick Gandil will usually sell for several thousand each. Most Plow Boys have one of the two ad backs shown below, but there are also some that are blank. Click on any of the thumbnails below to see the full image of the front.
Spaulding & Merrick issued a group of colorized American Indian photos probably around the same time.
