T224/T229 Pet and Kopec Mouthpiece Cigarettes

Last updated: Oct 31, 2022 @ 6:30 pm

Produced at the same factory that put out the gorgeous 1910 and 1911 Obak issues, this scarce set of boxers, swimmers, cyclists, track & field athletes, and aviators—most with West Coast connections—was made to the highest printing standards of the era. As with Obaks, these cards are often found with a purple factory stamp on the back. All T229’s are scarce and ones with a Kopec back are much harder to find than those with a Pet back.

For ACC nerds: Burdick realized by the time of the 1960 ACC printing that T224 (Pet Cigarettes) and T229 (Kopec Cigarettes) were actually a single set—see the Parmalee cards below—so he retired the T224 designation. PSA didn’t get that message, apparently. I’ve included a full checklist at the bottom of this page.

Tom Longboat, a great First Nations of Canada (Mohawk) long distance runner, is included in this set, as well as the roller skater Harley Davidson, who had no connection to the motorcycle manufacturer.
